Between March 14 and the end of summer, 2022, CSUMB will be upgrading the campus data network in all the state-owned buildings on campus.

The Division of Information Technology's Network Services department has begun the planning process to upgrade the entire campus network this spring as part of the CNI program. The access layer network electronics serving all state-owned buildings will be replaced with current, modern equipment. This large deployment will take a number of weeks as we install, configure, and test the system before we migrate the end users one building at a time. This will require a short service interruption to each building during the migration phase.
About CNI - Common Network Infrastructure
The Common Network Infrastructure (CNI) program is an ongoing effort to maintain and modernize CSU networks as technology advances and user needs evolve. In addition to introducing new network technologies to the campus, the program provides a refresh of the communication infrastructure on a periodic basis, to ensure that network services remain current, reliable, and robust. The CNI program is centrally funded, CSU-wide, and provides network electronics and services to State-owned and State-operated facilities.
CSUMB’s CNI Deployment Schedule
Currently, the CNI equipment deployment is scheduled over a twelve-week period, in two overlapping phases.
- Phase 1 - Deployment and testing - March 7 - May 20
- This involves installing and testing the new network equipment in each building. There will be no outages during this phase.
- Phase 2 - End user migrations - March 14 - End of Summer, 2022
- Every building will experience some intermittent downtime as the end users are moved over to the new network.

Q. When will my building be affected?

Q. How will my department be affected during the network deployment?
A. Approximately 30-60 minutes of downtime for most buildings – affecting all network and Wifi connections, and VOIP phones. Outages may be intermittent during this period.
Q. What buildings are in the scope of CNI?
A. All State-Owned Campus Buildings. Residence Halls and the Otter Student Union are not currently scheduled for maintenance.
Q. Who will be performing the Upgrade?
A. Deloitte is the Contractor and will be working with Network Services staff throughout the project.
Q. What can we expect during the upgrade?
A. There will be a crew from Deloitte accompanied by Network Services Staff who will enter the Telecom Rooms in each building, replace the Network Switches, and re-connect them to all necessary ports. No work will be performed at users’ desks or other areas or workspaces. All work will be performed in the Telecom Rooms, so crews only need access to those areas, with all Staff and Contractors following campus Covid-19 safety policies and procedures.
Q. What do I do if there is a network problem after the upgrade?
