Overview
These are our operating system support levels for all CSUMB owned/managed computers. For security and compatibility we only support operating systems in the active status of their lifecycle.
Note: If you're using a personal computer, we recommend using an operating system with a status of "Active" to ensure it's compatible with CSUMB's software and services.

Operating System Status Definitions
Status |
Definition |
Active (Supported) |
Operating system is stable and actively patched by the manufacturer as well as compatible with our existing hardware and software packages. This is the OS preferred on campus computers.
Computers will have this operating system on it when returned to the customer after being worked on by IT.
|
Deprecated (Supported) |
Operating system is currently functional but is nearing the end of its life cycle and will soon no longer be supported by the manufacturer.
Computers coming into IT for repair with this OS will be returned to customers with an operating system in "Active" status unless there is an approved operational need to retain a deprecated operating system.
If you notice your CSUMB owned/managed computer is using a deprecated operating system please submit a Computer Software Install or Update service ticket to have your computer updated.
|
End of life (Not supported/allowed) |
Operating system has reached the end stage of its life cycle and is no longer supported by the manufacturer. Manufacturer no longer patches for security vulnerabilities or compatibility.
End of life operations systems are not supported by IT.
Any computers with this operating system must be reprovisioned or replaced and will be blocked from using the CSUMB wired or wireless network.
If you notice you are using an end of life operating system, cease doing so as soon as possible and contact IT immediately.
|
Testing (Not supported) |
This is a major new release of an operating system and IT is still testing its compatibility with key hardware and software packages used by our campus.
This software is not yet supported by IT but we are actively working towards moving this software to active status as soon as we have it stable in our campus computing ecosystem. |

Operating system service notes
Windows 10 will reach end of life support from Microsoft on October 14, 2025. What you should know:
- After October 14, 2025 Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, patches or support to Windows 10.
- Using an operating system beyond the end of life date is a campus security risk.
- IT is currently working on a plan to update all existing workstations to Windows 11.
- Put in a Computer Software Install or Update ticket to be migrated over before then.
- Once EOL has been reached for Windows 10, IT will no longer allow computers running Windows 10 to connect to our network.
Windows 7 & 8 are no longer supported/allowed: CSUMB-issued computers running Windows 7/8 cannot be used on campus. If you have one of these please cease using it and submit a Computer Software Install or Update service ticket. Note: CSUMB-issued computers running Windows 7 cannot be used after 12/31/2021. If you have one of these please submit a Software Update service ticket.
Linux, Unix, and Chrome OS
No support is available for any versions of Linux, Unix, or Chrome OS (used on Chromebooks).
