All new Macs as of mid-2020 were deployed with the new login screen, called Jamf Connect. Since that initial deployment, Jamf Connect has gone through many updates, but we did not get those updates pushed out to all of our Macs. We are now in the process of updating the older Jamf Connect Login software to bring everyone up to the current version.
How do you know if your Mac needs this update?
The old Jamf Connect Login screen looks like the image shown below. The old screen has a large solid gray box containing the username and password fields and a button labeled "Network Connection". If this is your current login screen, then it will be updated.
Macs running the new version of the Jamf Connect Login screen look like the image shown below, with the Username and Password fields set in a translucent box and the Wi-Fi connection button is a round blue icon in the top right corner. If the Mac you use already has this new login screen, then it is already updated and you can disregard this update notice.
What can you expect the upgrade process to look like?
If your Mac prompts to update to the newest Jamf Connect Login, the following is what that process will look like.
- When the update starts, you'll be prompted to Start now or delay for up to 1 day. You will not need to close any applications or log out of the Mac to install the update. If you choose to start later, then you may see the prompt again after the time you select. Make your selection and click Submit.
- When the update has completed, this dialog box will appear:
- Sign in with your CSUMB Username and Password.
- Select your multi-factor authentication method
Logging in with the new Jamf Connect Login screen
After the Jamf Connect update, your Mac's login experience will work as described in the knowledge base article Logging in on a Mac.
- At the login screen, use your CSUMB Username (OtterID) and password to log in. This uses your current Okta account password.
- Choose your Okta MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) method
- After successful login, your Mac desktop will load as usual.
What will be different after the update?
- After the Jamf Connect update, your Mac's login experience will work as described in the knowledge base article Logging in on a Mac.
- When you log in while the Mac is connected to the Internet, it will connect to the Okta service to confirm your password. It will also prompt you for one of your multifactor authentication (MFA) methods.
- If the Mac is not online, you can still log in offline as long as you have already logged in previously; just use the same password.
- A significant change to computer security is that you will only be able to log into the Mac using your CSUMB account. Other local accounts cannot be used to log into the Mac at the login screen.
