How to Set Up a Personal Wi-Fi Hotspot on Your Phone

A Personal  Wi-Fi Hotspot lets you share the cellular data connection of your phone

iOS/iPhone

Step 1: Turn on your phone's hotspot
  1. Go to Settings And then Personal Hotspot
  2. Tap the slider next to Allow Others to Join.
Step 2: Connect another device to your phone's hotspot

On the device that you want to connect, go to the WiFi settings and look for your iPhone in the list. Then tap the Wi-Fi network to join. If asked, enter the password for your Personal Hotspot.

Android phones

Step 1: Turn on your phone's hotspot
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & internet And then Hotspot & tetheringAnd then  Wi-Fi hotspot.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi hotspot.
  4. To see or change a hotspot setting, like the name or password, tap it. If needed, first tap Set up Wi-Fi hotspot.
Step 2: Connect another device to your phone's hotspot

On the device that you want to connect, go to the WiFi settings and look for your phone in the list. Then tap the Wi-Fi network to join. If asked, enter the password for your Wi-Fi hotspot.

If you don't see the option for Personal Hotspot (iOS) or Wi-Fi hotspot (Android), contact your phone carrier to make sure that you can use Personal Hotspot with your plan.

Charges and data limits

Depending on your wireless carrier and specific wireless plan you may incur data charges and/or data limits when using your phone as a personal hotspot. Please check with your carrier for charges and data limitations. Neither CSUMB, nor the IT Department, are responsible for any charges or overages that may occur when using your personal smart phone as a wifi hotspot.
