Verifying your identity with IT

When you run into account issues and call the Technology Help Desk for assistance, we may need to verify your identity before performing certain actions like sending reset password links or changing information such as the recovery email address on your account. We do this to keep access to your account access safe.

We may ask for

To keep your information secure and make sure we are talking to the correct person regarding your account, the CSUMB Technology Help Desk agents may ask you to verify your identity by providing us with one or more of the following pieces of information but only over the phone only, never over email, chat, or text:

  • Last four digits of your social security number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your phone number as it appears on your record
  • Your address as it appears on your record

We will not reset passwords or change your account recovery email address over email, chat, or text because these are not encrypted forms of communication and not considered secure.

We will not ask for

Please remember that the Division of Information Technology will never ask you for the following information whether that be over the phone, over email, chat, or text message:

  • Your password
  • Your entire social security number
  • A copy of your driver's license or passport
  • Your mother's maiden name
