Test Taking Accommodation: Extra Time

What is this accommodation?

Students with this accommodation receive extra time on exams intended to be completed in a single session and graded, such as; quizzes, pop quizzes, tests, exams, midterms, and finals. The additional time is calculated from the total time given to the class to take the exam. Be sure to only provide the extra time approved for, no more and no less.

  • For example, you have a student authorized for time and a half. If the class receives 90 minutes to complete, the student will receive an additional 45 minutes, totaling 135 minutes to complete the exam.

Why is it important?

CSUMB must provide appropriate academic adjustments and auxiliary aids and services necessary to afford an individual with a disability an equal opportunity to participate in our educational courses. (In accordance with Subpart E of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973).

How can I support my students?

Schedule a meeting with your student. This is an interactive process between you and your student to discuss their academic needs for support with testing and how you and your department can meet the accommodation.

Recommendations based on exam type:

In-class exams: Determine how the student will obtain extra time on their exam. Below are options to help support what you and the student decided will be the best course of action.

If you or your department are facilitating the exam.

Instructors can provide testing accommodations directly to students or have someone from their department assist with proctoring.

  • Fill out this Faculty testing facilitation form, if you or your department staff are able to stay after class or have designated another testing space in your department for the extra time. Confirm the exam date, time, location, and proctor (if needed) with your student.
  • You will also want to ensure the testing space has reduced distractions. Examples of a reduced distraction environment include; a separate classroom, a quiet space (e.g. conference room), and an instructor’s office. Use these guidelines to help create an environment with reduced distractions

If you are not able to facilitate or find an appropriate testing space.

  • Set up an exam at the Test Center. The Test Center provides an alternative testing space where students may complete exams with extra time in an environment with reduced distractions.

If the student needs assistive technology with their exam.

Online exams: If an exam is to be completed through Canvas, extra time can be added for an individual student. Follow this Canvas guide to help give extra time to students Watch this video (3:33) on how to give your students extra time in Canvas.

Take-home exams: A take-home exam can be completed outside the classroom over multiple days. In these cases, a student may or may not receive extra time depending on the nature and duration of the exam.  Contact the SDAC advisor listed at the bottom of the student's Semester Accommodation Letter to determine if extra time is appropriate.

Prepare class exam dates in advance. Take the time to plan your exam dates before your class begins. Share them with students regularly and be explicit through written and verbal communication. Consider the calendar in Canvas. It populates exam due dates and a to-do list students can reference in the class calendar.
