Symptoms of a computer virus

If you're experiencing any of the following issues on your computer you may have a virus:

  • Slow computer (it takes longer to start up or open programs)
  • New applications appear without you downloading them
  • Unexpected shut downs or restarting without warning
  • Frequent system crashes or error messages
  • Unexpected pop-up windows
  • Internal fan seems to be working hard when you aren’t doing much
  • Emails sending automatically from your accounts without your knowledge
  • Lagging web browser, or your web browser constantly redirects

Note: Some of these can be symptoms of other computer issues as well as virus infection.

You have a virus, what's next?

  • Update your virus protection software and run a full-system scan. Don't have any? You might still be able to download our free antivirus software now, it's always one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself before getting a virus. Follow the instructions within your antivirus software to quarantine and remove the virus.

    • Pro Tip: Make sure to run another full scan after you've removed the virus just to make sure it's truly gone.

  • Remove your computer from the network (wired or wireless) and delete your temporary files. Deleting these files is usually easy, but how to do it depends on your operating system (like Windows or macOS). Google "How do I delete temporary files on Windows11" or "How do I delete temporary files on macOS Ventura".

  • Boot in Safe Mode. If you can't delete files because your computer is malfunctioning, try booting up in “Safe Mode.” Safe mode restricts certain programs so you can work to fix the issue without interruption. Google "How do I boot in Safe Mode on my mac" or "How do I boot in safe mode in Windows 11".

  • Factory reset your computer. Consult the documentation with your machine for instructions on how to reset your device. This resets it to the point of purchase.

    • Note: This will result in the loss of files, applications, and other data because it's like starting over.

  • Pro Tip: If you're not comfortable doing this take your computer store like Best Buy or the Apple Store to seek professional help.
