Reset the Dell Library Loaner Without a Password

If you received a library loaner laptop that still has another user's account in it, you will not be able to log in. Follow these instructions to reset the Dell without having their account information.

  1. At the log on screen press and hold the shift key down while clicking on Restart. Continue pressing shift key and click Restart anyway. Continue to hold shift key until the blue Choose an option screen.

  2. At Choose an option select Troubleshoot.
  3. On the Troubleshoot screen select Factory Image Restore.
  4. At the Factory Image Restore page it's going to ask for a key, leave this field blank. Click Skip this drive on the bottom right corner.
  5. The computer will restart and launch Support Assist OS Recovery.
  6. In the upper right corner, select and connect to your WiFi network then select Done.

  7. Select Reset and Update then select Next.
  8. Select Do not back up my files and click Next.
  9. You will get a screen popping up letting you know it's going to permanently delete the data. Select Yes, Continue.
  10. On the Confirm reset screen, select Recycling/Gifting from the reason pull-down menu, check the I understand box and click Next.

You will get a white screen that states the reset/update is in progress.  This can take nearly an hour, but the machine is removing any data from the previous person.

When it's done the computer will restart itself. Once it's done restarting you should see a screen asking you to connect to your WiFi.  You are now able to set up the computer according to the directions: Setting up your Dell library loaner computer.
